GUYSBOROUGH-ANTIGONISH – The separation of the Guysborough Journal and Antigonish This Week is no more, with the merger of the two papers in this week’s edition.
Antigonish This Week launched in April 2025 as a special section within The Journal — which has been in publication for 32 years. Publisher Allan Murphy cites the popularity of Antigonish This Week — presented as a paper within a paper — as a main reason for the merger.
“That, combined with the feedback we received from a readers’ survey in November, really pointed us in this direction,” he said.
The new Guysborough-Antigonish Journal also features a design refresh for the paper.
“We took on the expansion last year with a commitment to keep Guysborough County news coverage at the same strong level as it’s been in the past,” he said. “And that will continue to be the case going forward. There’s so much happening in both counties, and the impact of news events and issues is felt throughout our coverage area.”
He said bringing coverage of the two areas together under the paper’s new name brings additional flexibility in how news from the area is presented.
Editor Alec Bruce explained: “Integrating the two papers allows us to shape the publication as one cohesive newsroom product. We can now assess the full news picture each week and give prominence to the most significant stories, wherever they arise, while continuing to serve each community with depth and consistency. The transition has been a positive one for both our team and our readers.”
The paper’s team of journalists includes Corey LeBlanc, associate editor for Antigonish.
Murphy said the design refresh gives the newspaper a “modern, clean presentation,” with more diversity in story presentation styles.
The Guysborough-Antigonish Journal is available on newsstands in both counties plus Sheet Harbour every Wednesday, and through subscriptions from the paper’s website or by calling 902-533-2851.
The paper plans to update its online presence to reflect its new name in the coming weeks.
