SHERBROOKE — The Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s new council was sworn in during its inaugural meeting on Oct. 30.

The council, which will serve until 2028, includes Emma Tibbo (District 1), Dana O’Connell (District 2), Beulah Malloy (District 3), Scott Beaver (District 4) and James Fuller (District 5).

Along with taking their oath of office, councillors selected Fuller as warden and Malloy as deputy warden, who will serve in those positions for a two-year term.

“I feel we will all do our utmost to work together for our community,” Fuller told The Journal in an email, noting that St. Mary’s is “fortunate to have a very talented council from diverse backgrounds.”

Fuller said he was humbled to be selected as warden and will work to the best of his ability to see council’s many projects – in areas such as housing, economic development, tourism attraction and responsible solutions to waste disposal – through to completion.

He added, “These goals are a team effort, and I look forward to being part of the team.”

During the inaugural meeting, councillors signed a code of conduct, determined which members will have cheque-signing authority and had a brief review of internal and external committees. Appointments to those will be made during council’s next committee of the whole meeting.

To accommodate the schedules of its members, council decided to change the start time for its monthly and committee of the whole meetings from 4 to 6 p.m.

Councillors, who were scheduled to join their colleagues from across the province for an orientation session on Nov. 4, will be attending the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities fall conference, along with CAO Doug Patterson, from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Friday, Nov. 29, in Halifax.
